At the 2025 BC Organic Conference, we were honoure At the 2025 BC Organic Conference, we were honoured to welcome Jacob Beaton of @teacreektraining as one of our keynote speakers!

Jacob spoke about his experience starting a farm with his family and growing an Indigenous skills training program. He discussed the barriers he encountered as an Indigenous person and the systems in place that have prevented Indigenous peoples from participating in Canada's agricultural system. This included the Peasant Farm Policy, which restricted Indigenous people from accessing farm tools and limited the size of their production, and the Indian Act's provisions such as the Permit System, which required permission of the Indian Agent to sell agricultural products. Likewise, Canada's lending institutions have not serviced Indigenous growers until recently.

Jacob offered some hard truths about Canadian history, but also opened an invitation to support Indigenous farmers and work together on reconciliation. Tea Creek is an innovative and exciting project, and reminds us that agriculture can be used to regenerate livelihoods, culture and opportunities throughout our province!

We were grateful to welcome so many amazing keynot We were grateful to welcome so many amazing keynotes to our 2025 BC Organic Conference, including Brent Preston & Gillian Flies from @thenewfarm.

Their keynote was inspiring, personal, and a powerful reminder that we can’t change the world alone. By growing biodiversity on their farm and building stronger human connections, they’re showing how collaboration can multiply impact—and make the journey more fun!

It was an empowering start to the conference that brought everyone together. ❤️
